New EGNOS Open Service Definition released!

The European Commission has released version 2.0 of the EGNOS Open Service Definition Document (SDD). The revised document reflects recent improvements in EGNOS geographic coverage and other enhancements. The new version 2.0 of the European Commission’s EGNOS SDD (Open Service Definition Document) reflects recent improvements implemented for the EGNOS service. The document shows significant improvements in the geographic coverage of the EGNOS Open Service as can be seen from the map below.

GSA and the European Commission meet the mobile developer community at Mobile World Congress

Road User Charging: Belgian insights

Belgium is making preparations for introducing a Road User Charging (RUC) scheme for heavy vehicles. This scheme could potentially be extended to all vehicles across the country in a few years time. Meanwhile a small case study in the Belgian city of Leuven has shown how a RUC scheme based on satellite technology could help relieve congestion and change driver behaviour.

GSA SME showcase success in Prague

On 27 March the GSA’s HQ hosted a very successful workshop for Czech SMEs and other business organisations and individuals to present the potential of this major growth area.

Mapping gravity more accurately

By combining GNSS and EGNOS augmented positioning with airborne inertial measurements and a global gravity model, also derived from space-based technology, the Galileo for Gravity project is developing an accurate, cost effective gravimetry surveying service. This has tremendous potential for enhancing activities such as mineral prospecting and a wide range of other commercial and academic applications. 

President Barroso visits GSA Prague HQ

Yesterday (Wednesday 3 April), the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso visited the European Global Navigation and Satellite System Agency (GSA) in Prague. He saw how the GSA is managing the Galileo and EGNOS programmes on behalf of the Commission and was briefed on developments in these exciting and valuable European space programmes.

Hungarian European Space Expo!

Hungary is clearly keen on space technology with more than 17 500 visitors passing through the doors of the European Space Expo in Budapest at the end of March. The free exhibition featuring Europe’s Galileo, EGNOS and Copernicus programmes was a big hit with Hungarian citizens of all ages during its first excursion into eastern Europe!

Curved approach lands benefits

EGNOS ensures that satellite navigation signals can be used for safety-critical applications such as guiding aircraft during their approach to airports and other in-flight manoeuvres. The FilGAPP FP7 project is working to develop advanced EGNOS-based navigation procedures that can deliver tangible benefits to the civil air sector across Europe and beyond.
